Online Marriage in Utah: Recognition in Germany and Legal Risks

This is a legal digital marriage ceremony conducted via the online program Zoom by the Utah County Clerk.

The future spouses do not have to be physically together at this time. Each can be at home in different countries, which is ideal for international couples facing visa restrictions.

For the ceremony, 2 witnesses over 18 years old are needed. The marriage is official, and an American Apostille is affixed to it. While fully legal, it is currently not recognized in Denmark or Israel.

BGH Ruling on Videoconference Marriages (The 2024 Precedent)

In Germany, following the 2024 Federal Court of Justice (BGH) ruling on videoconference marriages, recognition depends on proper legal preparation for the local immigration office (ABH) or registry office (Standesamt). We provide guidance on securing recognition for family reunification. This is also an inclusive option for LGBTQ+ same-sex marriages.

Why International Couples Choose Marriage in Denmark?

Getting married in Denmark is a fast-track alternative to the German bureaucracy. All documents must be approved by the Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset) to receive your certificate of marital status (Prøvelsesattest).Difference between marriage in Denmark and marriage in Germany:

    • Two to three times faster – requires significantly fewer documents than a German Standesamt;
    • No strict requirements for a certificate of marital status (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) validity periods;
    • Less to pay for certified translations of documents for the higher court in Germany;
    • We help you prepare for the relationship history check, which is crucial for non-EU citizens in 2026;
    • Possibility to quickly change your tax class and receive benefits averaging €350 more per month after marriage.

Difference between marriage in Denmark and marriage in the CIS:

    • After marriage in Germany with a Schengen visa, you can, with the help of a good lawyer and our school’s certificates, try to stay without returning to the country of origin for family reunification.;
    • You can save on airfare and arrange your honeymoon;
    • Not all countries in the CIS marry foreigners.
    • If you decide to register your marriage in Denmark yourself:
      – You won’t be able to book a date at the registry office without an agency in such a short timeframe. Only the agency has a link.
      – If you’re asked for additional documents, you won’t know where to send a large number of files without roaming in English, and the processing time will increase by 1.5 months by 2025.
      – You need a good knowledge of English to complete all the necessary paperwork.
      – All the requirements aren’t officially listed on the website. Only the agency knows them thanks to its experience.
      If you need to appeal, you need to know how to do it and where to send them.
      – Information about marriage in Denmark online is based on knowledge prior to 2019. Since 2019, the document submission system has changed. The information in the articles is not updated.

Required Documents for a Danish Marriage Certificate

If you don’t have a Schengen visa yet, your wedding in Denmark should be organized as follows:

  • 1. Inquire at the embassy or visa center about your chances of obtaining a Schengen visa. Do you need an invitation from the German immigration authorities or a handwritten invitation? Which documents will increase your chances of getting a visa?
    2. Find out how long it will take to obtain a visa at the center or sign up for a waiting list at the embassy and find out when your visa will be ready.
    3. Meanwhile, gather your documents, and I will translate them from English, Russian, German, or Kazakh. Translations are not included in the price of the turnkey service.
    4. Once the client receives the visa, scan the performer’s passport with all pages at 300 dpi on the same day or as soon as possible (this can be done while copying or at a scanning service). 5. You need at least 2-3 months from your visa receipt date as of 2025, in case Denmark requests additional documents or the registry office doesn’t have a date available. You must have 2 months from the date you send all documents to Denmark.
  • * I do not provide transportation to Denmark, a photographer, travel directions, or witnesses. I cannot provide hotel prices in advance. Witnesses are not always necessary. With them, you can get a marriage date faster. Not every municipality requires a 2-3 day stay. You can get married on the same day. The list of documents and additional services is in the PDF file below. Read calmly and carefully, If necessary, highlight what you need.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): Marriage in Denmark & Zoom

    Is a Danish or Utah Zoom marriage recognized in Germany?

    Yes. Marriages in Denmark are fully recognized in Germany for family reunification. For Utah Zoom marriages, following the 2024 Federal Court of Justice (BGH) ruling, recognition by the local Standesamt or ABH depends on specific circumstances and proper Apostille legalization. We help prepare the legal basis for your application.

    Which visa is suitable for marriage in Denmark?

    A Schengen visa or any other legal residence permit in Europe is required. A German national visa (e.g., a bride visa) is not suitable. If you don’t have a Schengen visa or cannot travel, an online Zoom wedding in Utah is your best alternative.

    Do we need to provide a certificate of marital status (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis)?

    One of the main advantages of getting married in Denmark is that you do not need the complex German Ehefähigkeitszeugnis. We will guide you through alternative documents accepted by the Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset).

    Are witnesses needed for the ceremony?

    For a marriage in Denmark, witnesses are required, but they are usually provided by the registry office itself. For a Zoom wedding, 2 witnesses over 18 years old are needed, and they can also join online.

    Do we need to put an Apostille on the marriage certificate?

    For Germany, a Danish marriage certificate often doesn’t strictly require an Apostille, but some officials still request it. For a Utah Zoom marriage, an American Apostille is mandatory. We provide certified translation and Apostille services to ensure a smooth process.
